Samira Rathod

Samira Rathod

Architect, SRDA, Mumbai

Working from the maximum city Mumbai in India, Samira is a architect, teacher, writer and editor. With an uncompromising sense of ethics and passion for the idea of design she established Samira Rathod Atelier in 2000 and since then the firm has over the last 18 years built an enviable portfolio of architectural and interior projects that remind us of the meaning of beauty, sensuousness and materiality. The firm outreach work is equally vigorous and she is the founder and editor of Spade, a design magazine that reminds and reinforces the need for intellectual and esoteric investigations and thinking. Through this she commissions and conducts research regularly and looks at areas as diverse as the order of the railway tracks in India to architecture of Kerala to the botanical histories of the city zoo. The firm has been awarded at alarming regularity and wears the accolade lightly; but there is no denying that she is amongst a handful of designers in India who truly care about what it means to work in the complex context that is India. In recent times the firm has revisited her early love and has set up Big Piano that designs and manufactures handmade whimsical furniture and over the last months has been feverishly working towards setting up a new paradigm of design education in India in a school building she is soon completing in the Indian countryside.
